“I don’t know that I’ve ever felt that I needed to be darker or present in a different way to be accepted as a Black person. I come from light-skinned race people so there’s no lack of clarity anywhere in my family about identity. I’ve always been Black and proud so it’s hard for me to imagine anybody would think I was anything other than what I am. That’s what always surprises me.”
