“You’ll hear many dark-skinned Dominicans talk about how things are hard for them, but if you ask them, “Do you think it’s because you’re Black?” they’ll tell you “I’m not Black! What are you talking about?!” When you have dark-skinned people trying to disassociate themselves from Blackness, why would somebody who’s of a lighter complexion want to be associated with that? So when people question my identity or my Blackness or my Africanness, I think it’s more that they automatically see my identity as a challenge to the way that they see the world and the way that they see themselves. It has nothing to do with me actually.”
