“Because I do recognize the privilege, I try to do my part to confront it. That’s why in my films I do anti-Oscar Micheaux casting. Oscar Micheaux always had the light skinned characters be the heroes. I go out of my way to find chocolate sistas, especially to act in a main role. If there’s two actors, and one is chocolate and the other one is light skinned, the light skinned one is more experienced, but the darker one looks like she can do it? I go with the darker one to give her the opportunity and to empower those little girls that watch it. ‘Cause they don’t see themselves enough.”
