“I identify with my African-American side more, yet I don’t really even know them. I was raised by my mom who is Czechoslovakian. When people would see me with her, they thought I was adopted. It’s kind of sad – growing up with my White side of my family, identifying as a little Black girl, and never really knowing my Black side of the family like that. As I’ve gotten older, I’m not as uncomfortable. I’ve gained my own self-confidence. It’s to the point now where I don’t care what anybody thinks when they see me with my mom. But every now and then I still feel it a little bit. I feel the eyes, and I can tell people are wondering what’s going on.”
