“When Dominicans say, ‘I’m not Black,’ I think it’s an issue of semantics. Because when people say, ‘I’m Black,’ a lot of times what they mean is ‘African-American.’ And I by no means am African-American – I’m Dominican culturally, through and through; and from the moment I open my mouth, you can tell the difference. A lot of times when I’ve gotten backlash for saying that I was Black, it’s because people were like ‘Why you trying to front?’ I’m not saying I’m African-American. I’m saying I’m Black – as in ‘of African descent.’”
