“I identify as Black. And when I say ‘Black,’ it’s not just based on race or color, it’s about what feels most comfortable in terms of a sense of home. For me, I associate identity with home. Growing up in Germany, I was never made to feel at home there. So the question for me has always been about where do I find myself at home, i.e. at peace – spiritually, culturally, in terms of who I am. Blackness was always about the place where I was comfortable enough to just be myself and be surrounded by people that let me be myself. And to this day, that’s been the only community that’s been fully affirmative.”
